How to rediscover your personal style

Finding your personal style isn’t something you can do in one day, but this journey of finding a wardrobe full of clothes that you seriously love will not only make getting dressed that bit easier but will also give you a new found confidence every day.

Step one: Create a mood board

This is where we start to visualise what we want our wardrobe to look like. Instagram and Pinterest are great tools for saving outfits that you love. Eventually, you will see a pattern in what you like. It may be that you have lots of romantic floaty dresses on your moodboard and therefore lean towards a boho look, or tailored trousers are a favourite so you’d lean towards a classic or scandi style. When you have a better idea of the styles you like it makes the process of creating the perfect wardrobe much easier.

Step two: Refresh your wardrobe

Before you start hunting for new clothes that fit into your ‘personal style moodboard’ it’s important to clear out the clutter. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t suit you, or it’s not seen the light of day in months or years it’s not worth saving. Be sure to hold onto the pieces that you can see working in your new found style profiles. A more concise and organised wardrobe is efficient and makes getting dressed in the morning so much easier.

Step three: Understand what you dislike

As you edit your wardrobe take note of the styles that you don’t like. Was it the shape or the colour that didn’t suit you? Did you buy somethingon impulse that was trending at the time but didn’t actually fit your own personal style? Knowing what you don’t like is just as important as knowing what you do like, this will help save lots of time and money in the long run because you won’t be making the same fashion mistakes.

Step four: Find colours that work for you

Of course, there are certain colours that will suit your skin tone which will lift and brighten your face when you wear them. If you struggle to introduce some colour, a good place to start are some universally flattering colours: teal, fuschia, navy (instead of black) cobalt blue and emerald. That being said you need to choose colours that you truly love, just be more mindful of how you wear them. If it doesn’t look great next to your face try that colour in your accessories or trousers!

Step five: Find your core uniform

Have a selection of go-to pieces that will make the foundations of your wardrobe, like the perfect pair of jeans, a simple t-shirt or tailored blazer. These core items can be mixed and matched and styled with the more “out there” pieces. Once you’ve got this bit nailed the rest will fall into place.
